#BlessedDays (Sep-Oct ’13)

Dhul-Hijjah (ذو الحجة) is coming up, I hear! It’s the twelfth and final month in the Islamic calendar.

This is a very sacred month in the Islamic calendar, marking the end of the year. It is in this month in which the Hajj (pilgrimage) takes place.

“Dhu al-Hijjah” literally means “Possessor of the Pilgrimage.” It is during this month that pilgrims from all around the world congregate at Mecca to visit the Kaaba. The Hajj is performed on the eighth, ninth and the tenth of this month. Day of Arafa takes place on the ninth of the month. Eid al-Adha, the “Festival of the Sacrifice”, begins on the tenth day and ends on the thirteenth.

As a general principle, all people are the same, all months are the same, all days are the same and so on – unless, Allah the Almighty declares so otherwise. For example, in the case of people, yes they are all the same, be they rich or poor, strong or weak, black or white; but in the sight of Allah, special are those who are most obedient to Him and best in deeds. Likewise all months are the same, except the month of Ramadan, which Allah (SWT) has declared to be the best, most virtuous of them.

And so, all days are the same – except the first 10 days of Dhul Hijjah, which have been declared to be the 10 best days of the year!

How does that affect me, you ask? Well, it provides you with a wonderful opportunity to do good deeds for the sake of Allah and to maximize your acts of worship during this time to seek the pleasure of Allah and stack up on limitless rewards in the Hereafter! Sound fair?

Such is their importance that Allah (SWT) swears an oath by them in the Qur’an:

“By the dawn; by the ten nights.” [Qur’an 89:1-2].

The earliest scholars/commentators of the Qur’an agree that these are the first ten days of Dhul Hijjah.

According to an authentic hadith from Sahih Bukhari (2/456), narrated Ibn Abbaas (r.a.) that the Prophet (s.a.w.) said:

“There are no days in which righteous deeds are more beloved to Allah than these ten days.” The people asked, “Not even jihad for the sake of Allah?” He said, “Not even jihad for the sake of Allah, except in the case of a man who went out to fight giving himself and his wealth up for the cause, and came back with nothing.”
