Ah! For those times, when grandparents reprimanded on talking about or watching TV shows showing a non-mehram man and woman together, even if as characters they were husband and wife. When gay was a word that meant only happy.
And today? This is what is happening: “Supreme Court rules in favour of same-sex marriage nationwide.” (US)
As my hands write on this topic, my whole body shivers with fear. My heart feels constricted lest I be struck by the punishment of Allah. The ruling might have been given in the US but we Muslims today are “comfortable” with this topic.
Don’t we watch the western media happily and try to copy them? Does reading or watching about this heinous crime ever give us goosebumps? Or do we just digest the information as easily as if we were reading about a new scientific discovery in Sunday morning’s newspaper over a cup of tea? We’ve accepted it as a concept prevalent today in certain societies, something that as long as we are not doing is fine.
You know what? Forget the western media. Look at your own. Every other comedy show has a joke about homosexuality. Every other drama has a theme that interweaves this very concept. We watch these shows and dramas and we enjoy them. We might complain once in a while about how wrong this is and then we go back on repeating those jokes and laughing. It is so okay today to call someone gay or to poke these jokes at your friends. After all, you believe it is wrong, it is okay to make jokes then, isn’t it? You’re just joining in.
No, it is not okay! Will you start saying incest is okay tomorrow too? Oh, you did, I forgot. You watched Ishq-e-Mamnoon (Forbidden Love) and loved it. I don’t know what happens in that drama, neither do I want to, but the name says it all. Will you consider it okay if it starts happening in your family?
By being silent, if anything this is increasing our tolerance level to this foul hateful act. We’re being bombarded with this concept so much that common Muslims are being confused. I remember a modest Muslim girl from a conservative background coming to me once and asking, “is this thing natural?” No! It is not!
You need to repel this concept before your own child grows up to be influenced by this repugnant sin. Stop making jokes about homosexuality. It is NOT funny, really! It is inviting the punishment of Allah. Your heart should tremble when you come across any such thing in hearing, reading or watching. Stop others from talking about it in a light manner. Fear Allah!
إِنَّ الَّذِينَ يُحِبُّونَ أَن تَشِيعَ الْفَاحِشَةُ فِي الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا لَهُمْ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ فِي الدُّنْيَا وَالْآخِرَةِ ۚ وَاللَّـهُ يَعْلَمُ وَأَنتُمْ لَا تَعْلَمُونَ
“Indeed, those who like that immorality should be spread [or publicized] among those who have believed will have a painful punishment in this world and the Hereafter. And Allah knows and you do not know.” [An-Nur 19]
I don’t really understand this message. In my view, it is taught that Allah (Subhanahu Wata’ala) or God, or whichever deity you believe in, loves all. A simple matter such as sexuality shouldn’t bother him too much. He should still love a gay couple if they are happy, in love and believe in him. I’m a Roman Catholic, so I don’t understand the Quran as well as others, but it must be similar to the Bible or the Torah in which certain parts of it are outdated, written at a time when witchcraft and sacrifices were still believed in and preformed. I’m sure some parts of those texts are written for a era of history that we can no longer relate to and should therefore abandon. Obviously everyone is entitled to their own ideas and interpretations, I just thought that maybe the holy texts shouldn’t be taken literally. They were written by humans after all. Some things we should just leave to common sense. A gay couple who are happy together is hardly affecting any one else’s life.

Thankyou for that interesting comment. In Order for you to understand the message you must understand the concept of Islam first. Then go through gorap…………. Now that we have the basics in place we don’t have the Christian concept that Allah is love and love is Allah and it’s all love love love but rather we believe that Allah is the most merciful, the most wise, and so forth. Our purpose is in this life is to worship Allah as he is our creator (51:56) so to know whether certain actions are displeasing to Allah we have to see what Allah says. The Quran is the speech of Allah not divinely inspired to unknown men like the bible. In fact the Quran puts forth this challenge that if you think that Quran was written by a man then bring forth a chapter like it, people have tried and failed. The Quran tells us that understanding the Quran is easy so will some one use their intellect to understand? Islam didn’t start from Muhammad but rather from Adam. Because all the prophets taught the oneness of Allah. The revelation brought by all the prophets was meant specifically for their time and place but the message of Quran is universal till the day of judgement. As human beings our faculties are limited but Allah is beyond these limitations so He knows the things that are best for us beyond our common sense. The Quran is relatable even today if only someone comes with a sincere heart and a humble attitude. We interpret the Quran based on how prophet Muhammad and his companions understood it as Allah himself taught them the right way. Our religion is based on strict principles and references you can go and check the science of it yourself in usoolul hadith and Quran. Homosexuality is a grave sin, it not only harms those who act on it but also spreads evil in the society. Who says it won’t effect anyone else’s life? We need hard facts to prove such claims. The destruction of the people of lut is testament to the danger involved in it. Even today you can go and visit the ruins of these people.
