My mate told me to go and get some fish & chips, and we ended up at a lecture about the purpose of life!

By Nadeem Ashraf Disclaimer: The purpose of this article is to inspire other brothers and sisters that Dawah missions can be organised anywhere in the world. You just need the will to do it. Yes, the above title was suggested by the CEO of Youth Club, after he heard about one of the many Dawah adventures that I had whilst on my short stay in the UK! Youth Club has made some efforts in getting involved in the Dawah scene in UK. It is a sad reality that aside from iERA, Discover Islam, the Quran Project and the many small affiliates, not much is being done for the benefit of the numerous wayward Muslim youth in the UK. So, we went about organising a few events for the brothers and sisters of Crawley.  Crawley is a town located in the county of Sussex, about 45 minutes south of London. In all, we organised 5 events.  Brother Imran Ibn Mansur aka Dawah Man was the main character in our projects supported by his Dawah Man team, which includes Dawud Loka , Guled , Saad Ibn Mansur and Musa Adnan. Before, I give a brief about the various events we organised, I also want to add that we also made several collaborative efforts with iERA, Hittin Institute and Exhibition Islam, Alhumdulillah. These organisations will support our Dawah efforts through various means including financial , material and general support inshaAllah. So, back in April 2013, we organised an event to expose the

The Barbecue Pit

Bismillah. I was standing by the barbecue pit, staring at the juicy tikkas (pieces of meat) and the glowing coals. As the fat from the skewers dripped on the coals, the flames roared and rose higher. At that moment, the fire looked angry and scary, crackling more brightly with each fat dripping. A strange visualization came to me for a fleeting instant and my mind envisioned those pieces of fat as human skin. The more it burned, the more the fire blazed… No, I’m not crazy to be thinking of such vampirish thoughts right on Eid day, the day of joy and celebration. It is something that we’re never supposed to be heedless of yet tend to forget, and so Allah reminds by such scenes. Harsh though it may sound, but such an end might be awaiting us forever and ever. Allah says in the Quran, “Indeed, those who disbelieve in Our verses – We will drive them into a Fire. Every time their skins are roasted through We will replace them with other skins so they may taste the punishment. Indeed, Allah is ever Exalted in Might and Wise”. [An-Nisa 56] Right below the human skin is the layer of fat. Just like any oil or fat of this world, maybe that is what will ignite the fire of Hell. As Allah says, “…  then fear the Fire, whose fuel is men and stones, prepared for the disbelievers.” [Al-Baqarah 24] The question then is, am I living my life such that

Sacrifice Lovingly

By Umm ‘Aisha Bismillah hir Rahman nir Raheem Scene 1: Younger Sister: Baji! Do you truly love me? Elder Sister: Of course I do! You need something again?!! Younger Sister: Yeah, that pink dress?? Elder Sister: Noooo! Not that one. Take the other one I bought last week. Scene 2: Husband: You know I value you so much! Wife: Me too- Oh I forgot to tell you, I need some money for grocery. Husband: Not againnn… Scene 3: Slave: My Master! I love you so much, I can do anything for you. Master: ((slaughter your son)) ——————– Slave: Son, I have been ordered to slaughter you. Son: Do as you are ordered to do, Abbi! Scene 3 is playing out in my mind as the blessed days of Zilhajj and Eid ul Adha come nearer. As for the first two scenes, aren’t they common occurrences for us? We express our love for others, and just then and there, we prove through our actions that this love is not unconditional . That is how we deal with people in our lives, significant others around us.  But how about our dealings with Allah SWT? While our eyes can’t see Him, our reply to: “Who do you love the most?” is always “Allah SWT”. On the other hand, how much do we bother if our actions are actually pleasing to Him or not? Are we ready to sacrifice what we truly love for His sake? As He has taught us that: “You

Sacrifice, Sacrifice- Why bother?

Did you hear-? With the hundreds of popular ‘styles’ doing their rounds amongst us, be it in dress or living, the one quickly going out of fashion from our circles is the Sunnah style. We were to love him, Muhammad sallallaahu ‘alaihi wassalam, more than our family and sons, yet today we hardly know him… I can vividly remember how it started last year. ’Eid ul-Adha was approaching, dividing people into three clear groups like always. The best of them know what the festival brings with it; however the other two are unaware of its demands upon us. It was to be so that I learnt of the latter from a very close standpoint. Firstly, there are those who take animal sacrifice in its physical sense to epic proportions, however low they may be falling on the sincerity scale. They do not allow themselves to think of their pocket, nor do they consider other fard obligations that they are responsible for, before Allah asks them if they fulfilled the sunnah of animal sacrifice. The second group however, consists of the unfortunate who find this act unnecessary in and of itself. These are two miserable extremes. It was October 2008, and northern Pakistan suffered a massive quake. When Zulhijjah came around, a friend suggested that we should be giving away this money to stabilise our brothers and sisters in plight; come next year, we can celebrate ‘Eid along with them. In view of the emergency situation in the country, the

Build a Home in Your Hearts for Your Parents!

Just the other day, I was discussing with my undergraduate class how the first verse of Surat al-Fatihah is often translated: “All praise (and gratitude) is due to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds”. Here the Arabic word Rabb is translated as Lord. You know what the trouble with translation is? Sometimes some of the richness of meaning contained in the original words is compromised or not fully conveyed. So, translation may, at times, take away some of the power, beauty and depth of the Glorious Qur’an. We can re-discover the magic of the verse by exploring a bit, by reading commentaries, by doing some research, so to say. The word Rabb here when it is translated as Lord probably does not convey a lot to the uninitiated mind. What Rabb means, among other things, is Cherisher, Sustainer and Provider. On a deeper level, Rabb is someone on whom you are entirely dependent for your existence every single second and the One Who consistently sustaining you. This single word Rabb is a beautiful, amazingly concise and comprehensive, one-word rebuttal to the doctrine held by some early mechanists that states that God did create the universe but after setting the universe into motion like a gigantic automatic machine, He receded into the background leaving the machine to run by itself according to predetermined laws. Rabb is an antithesis to that doctrine and that states that not only did God create everything; He is still controlling, protecting, nurturing and holding it;

Hijab

Assalam o Alaikum (May Peace be with you all)! This blog post of mine revolves around Hijab, all about Hijab!  WHAT IS HIJAB? Literally the Arabic word Hijab means “Screen” or “Curtain” and so its purpose is to shield. Hijab is generally taken as a piece of cloth used by Muslim women to cover their heads. It is also called a head scarf. People wear Hijab in different ways; some of them just cover their heads and some also cover their faces, extending the Hijab into a Niqab. PURPOSE OF HIJAB Hijab, to many of us, may just seem a small piece cloth but it , in itself, means complete dignity. Women wearing Hijab feel a sense of protection of their dignities and graces from evil eyes. Hijab makes one feel, secure as the main purpose of Hijab is to make a women feel very precious so that she remains protected. A woman in Hijab is just like a pearl in a shell, it’s in the shell because it is special! The Muslimaat (Muslim women) wearing Hijab are freed from so many social pressures that other women in today’s society have to bear. In fact, today’s woman has become a show piece and so she has to dress up and make over herself, in such a way that she looks attractive, to avoid being pinpointed in the society. This is a lot of pressure especially for the teenage girls. But Islam always teaches simplicity and so hijab frees one from

#BlessedDays (Sep-Oct ’13)

Dhul-Hijjah (ذو الحجة) is coming up, I hear! It’s the twelfth and final month in the Islamic calendar. This is a very sacred month in the Islamic calendar, marking the end of the year. It is in this month in which the Hajj (pilgrimage) takes place. “Dhu al-Hijjah” literally means “Possessor of the Pilgrimage.” It is during this month that pilgrims from all around the world congregate at Mecca to visit the Kaaba. The Hajj is performed on the eighth, ninth and the tenth of this month. Day of Arafa takes place on the ninth of the month. Eid al-Adha, the “Festival of the Sacrifice”, begins on the tenth day and ends on the thirteenth. As a general principle, all people are the same, all months are the same, all days are the same and so on – unless, Allah the Almighty declares so otherwise. For example, in the case of people, yes they are all the same, be they rich or poor, strong or weak, black or white; but in the sight of Allah, special are those who are most obedient to Him and best in deeds. Likewise all months are the same, except the month of Ramadan, which Allah (SWT) has declared to be the best, most virtuous of them. And so, all days are the same – except the first 10 days of Dhul Hijjah, which have been declared to be the 10 best days of the year! How does that affect me, you ask? Well, it provides you with a wonderful opportunity to do good

#DestinationJannah (Aug-Sep ’13)

Join the campaign. Aug 15th till Sep 15th: #DestinationJannah Ramadan’s gone and most of us are struggling to maintain that spiritual high. It was easy in Ramadan to fast all day and stand in prayer all night, but how many of us have continued that practice all through Shawwaal? How many of us have continued to recite Quran like we did in Ramadan? Let’s be straightforward.. not many of us have been able to keep it up. It gets hard, I understand. Shaytan’s on the loose now, what more could you expect? But it’s not all that bad, you see. There’s hope. There’s hope in the fact that you don’t need to do BIG things in order to attain big rewards. There’s hope in the fact that even the smallest of deeds can get you into Jannah, provided they’re done with sincerity of intention and according to the sunnah of the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam). If you do them regularly, BONUS! #TwoThumbsUp! So let’s talk about the practical stuff. Let’s talk about the things that we can easily find time for in our busy schedules. Let’s talk about the small deeds that we usually overlook. Youth Club is giving you the opportunity to learn and teach. Use all the social media and networking tools available to you (Facebook, Twitter and blogs, to name a few) from August 15th till September 15th 2013 and post about the small deeds mentioned in the Quran/Sunnah for which we’re promised Jannah. Don’t forget to

3 REASONS FOR GOD

3 REASONS FOR GOD 3 Reasons for God There are many rational reasons for believing in God. This article will briefly explain three simple reasons for God’s existence. Order in the Universe When we reflect upon the nature of our world, we see order everywhere from the water cycle to the movement of the earth around the sun. Commenting on the order found in the universe, the physicist Stephen Hawking explains that the overwhelming impression ‘’is one of order, the more we discover about the universe, the more we find that it is governed by rational laws.’’[1]. This observation is shared by the vast majority of scientists. Since the universe has order and is governed by the ‘laws of science’, we should question how this order came about. The most effective way to answer this question is to reason to the best conclusion. Take your mobile phone for example, your phone is made of glass, plastic and metal. Glass comes from sand, plastic comes from oil and metal is extracted from the ground. Imagine you were walking in a desert (where there is lots of oil, sand and metals in the ground), and you found a mobile phone lying around. Would you believe that it came together by itself? That the Sun shone, the wind blew, lightning struck, the oil bubbled to the surface and mixed with the sand and metal, and over millions of years the mobile came together by chance? No one would believe such an explanation.

A LIVING MIRACLE

A living miracle Every single human on earth needs to know the following information. This information is so unbelievably exclusive that it could prove vitalto their very existence. Your instincts and decision making facultiesshould have by now made you convinced that a creator exists. This very creator must have surely communicated with mankind at some point in our history. This creator must have provided answers to those questions that every single human being has asked at some point in their lives. Questions like where did I come from? What happens after death? The origins of theuniverse? Etc. So this may come as a shock and surprise to youbut there ACTUALLY is a book that exists todaythat is claiming an extremely sensationalist claim! The claim is that this book has not been written by a human being! At this point many of you may start thinking  …” oh here we go, some crazy dude, in a fantasy world, some religious nut …!” But those claiming they are intelligent, intellectuals, well read or the ‘know it alls’! Should look into this. What is there to lose? If you see yourself as rational ‘normal ‘personwith a sane working mind then you can distinguish between what is false and what’s makes sense! So see for yourself if the following makes sense: So this book is saying or claiming that it is inimitable or in other words this cannot be matched by any other books. It is matchless or surpassed or cannot be written again. The book we are discussion is the Quran. 1. The Unique Literary Form of the Qur’an The Qur’an is a unique form of Arabic speech. The form of its language cannot be described as prose or poetry. It
