Ramadan Dip

By Nasser Ijaz Moghal There was this guy in a wheel chair who wanted to make a statement that even people in wheel chairs are capable. So he decided to enter into a marathon. He noticed something very interesting about the race that he was running. He noticed that there were many people at the beginning of the race and many people at the end of the race but all throughout the middle he was by himself. The only people present in the middle of the race are the participants. It has been my personal observation that the same wheel chair marathon happens in Ramadan. As soon as the moon is sighted people get all excited about Ramadan and flock to the Masjid and at the end particularly the 27th people come flocking back to the Masjid but somewhere in the middle of Ramadan people drop off. The ratio that I have devised for this is 5:2:4 ratio. Meaning there will be 5 rows in the Masjid at the beginning of Ramadan, 2 in the middle and 4 at the end. This phenomenon is the Ramadan Dip. Now Ramadan is a training camp in which people can boost their Imaan at record levels and survive the rest of the coming year. It is essential that we find a way to overcome this Ramadan dip. On the night before Ramadan I went to get a haircut. As my hair was being trimmed I thought wait this is a Dawah opportunity.

The Blessing Called Wudu

There are some moments in life that touch you forever! They make your heart thump loudly with ecstasy and excitement… And you want to live that moment and do not want it to end, ever! I live such moments about five times a day. When the first drop of water touches my hand, I feel a thrill pass through me. I wash my hands, rinse my mouth and nose, wash my face and arms, wipe my head with water and wash my feet. Oh bliss! It’s the wudu (Muslim ablution). Every organ of my body feels that happiness as water caresses it. It’s not just because it is summer, even in winter I get the same feeling of joy. I wondered what could be the reason of this, do I feel the same whenever I wash my hands/face or take a bath? I realized that this was not the case. Then I thought, maybe Allah puts this special feeling of freshness, revitalization and joy only in performing the Muslim ablution. Yes, this must be it! There’s another thing that I’m sure of. There must be some very deep wisdom hidden in washing only the organs that we’re meant to wash during wudu. If the western scientists haven’t started searching on it, they’re missing on it big time. We could have been told to wash the feet without including the ankles; or wash them, including the legs till knees; or not wash the arms. But the Creator fixed the body parts

Ramadan: Muslims and their Forgotten Empathy

Brilliant piece of poetry submitted by a sister. Today while making Iftari, a sudden image struck me, As I fried the Pakorey, And brewed the tea. Somewhere, a boy sits under a tree, Staring at his mud caked hands; holding a bruised knee. And the sound of a gunshot echoes again, And he gets up and runs, forgetting his pain. Back there in Homs, clinging to dear life, Who knows who fasts, and still survives? I shake my head and set the plates, The spoons and glasses, and the dates, And as I pour cold water in a jug, I am reminded of the water shared, and a cherished hug, From a Palestinian girl, some years ago. Through a forced smile behind tears that flowed, She held my hands just to say: “Do remember us, whenever you pray.” And finally when the call for prayer is heard, I gaze at the table set, with a vision now blurred. How can I stuff myself with scrumptious feasts, When another Muslim child, lies starved, in this heat? As his helpless mother rocks him to sleep, And in her heart, silently weeps, For all hungry mouths to feed, five, And another son who could not survive. While we look up deals on “All you can eat,” Not many out there can afford a treat. So have a heart, when you bloat at Iftar, For those who fast in the midst of a war. Hold on, make prayer, and raise your hands, If

CEO’s Message to the Fajr Train Crew

Raja Zia ul Haq, CEO of Youth Club, has sent you a message! My dear brothers & sisters in Islam, Assalaam o’Alaykum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatu!  Masha’Allah what an honor it is that our Fajr Train has finally reached its destination after forty days, in the blessed month of Ramadan. And like the cheerful flight attendant would say, “I sincerely hope you had a pleasant journey with us!” 🙂 A big thank you and jazakum’Allahu khayrn firstly to the brothers and sisters from Youth Club who helped to bring this project together and masha’Allah saw it through till the end. You guys know who you are, I have no words but can only pray that may Allah increase you in darajaat and may He be well pleased with your efforts! Seriously! A massive congratulations to all the winner groups who stuck to their guns all the way! Alhamdulillah, if you successfully woke up for Fajr or struggled hard to do so, you are ALL winners in-sha’Allah in the sight of Allah. Keep up the good work! You know this is not the end, rather this is just the beginning. I would encourage the groups to stay in touch with each other, meet for chai/coffee etc. regularly (since, believe it or not, each of your group members lives very close to you, maybe even in your neighborhood). Allah (SWT) tells us in the Glorious Qur’an:  “And keep yourself patiently with those who call upon their Lord in the morning and

Mobile Phone: Boon or Bane

Order in the court room. Ladies and gentlemen. The task before us today is to use all our faculties of reasoning and understanding to judge whether the Cell Phone, the communication miracle of the twentieth century, is guilty of being one of the biggest technological nuisances that ever existed and whether it should be banished from social life. Let us first hear what the prosecution has to say. Prosecution: “Your honor, I place before you, a series of arguments against the defendant, presenting offences in their order of gravity, moving from the least to the most grave. One, the cell phone has no sense of social propriety or decorum. Let me recount to you a familiar scene: There was perfect silence in the class room except for Dr. So and So’s voice. Students were sitting in a state of rapt attention (or a state that successfully emulated a state of rapt attention) and all of a sudden, out of the blue, the ambience of earnest academic activity is shattered with some totally disco ring tone. People turn to look at the offender with an air of amusement, feeling smugly superior that their cell phones are safely turned off or put on vibration. The unfortunate offender fumbles for the phone in her handbag, manages to find it after an embarrassingly long interval and turns it off with a gesture that says, “Shut up!”. Then she looks up with a sheepish look on her face and the academic activity resumes. Behold,

Romance-The ‘HEART’ reality !

Ahhhhhh that feeling .. We’ve all been there at some point in our life. Girl meets boy oh sweet ! Boy meets girl awww how lovely. Boy meets boy..awww ….how…eh?! …woah hang on! Wait .. What?! Well that’s what the world is pushing us to believe so we have to accept it don’t we?! So where have we tried to find love? At school hormones are raging. Our parents have been listening to tragic heartbreak black and white Bollywood songs since the 50’s. Dilip Kumar singing his heart out because his lover left him. Shammi Kapoor shouting and behaving like a loony to impress his girls shouting Yahoo! ( not the email service!) and so on. We have been fed Bollywood since our childhood. So when we are in school we all think we are heroes and will meet a girl! College life comes and we get a bit more complicated now. We don’t just stare at the girl, we try and take advantage of the mixed classes and actually get to chat to the opposite gender! We constantly look for compliments. Constantly seeking opportunities to get ‘alone’ with them, hoping they would just like you back. University, and we are now masters of love! We are using modern technology to chat up the person you like or want. Add them to your Facebook. Like their comments, share a video, send messages, offer friendship, “Lets become very good friends…special friends .” The same situations take place within the work place.

A Different Perspective

Bismillah, Ramadan has begun and we all know that: “When the month of Ramadan (begins) the gates of mercy are opened, and the gates of Hell are closed and the devils are chained.” (Muslim:2496) All of us talk about Ramadan preparation and the bounties plus the reward of Ramadan which is good. But today, I want to share a different perspective. You see, whether we keep a 17 hour fast or an 18 hour one, it ends. Even when the month of Ramadan comes in June and July we get through the day and make it till the iftar. It seems hard, it looks difficult but we make it despite all the difficulties and hardships because the reward is immense. We can learn a valuable lesson from this. In life, it seems as if hard times will not end. We will break down in the middle or lose strength because we are not powerful enough to endure all the toils and uphill battles. But whether it is a 17 hour fast or a 17 week’s affliction, it eventually ends. It does not last forever. Charlie Chaplin said: Nothing is permanent in this wicked world-not even our troubles. It is true, and when these hardships end, it is a beginning of beautiful serenity. All we have to do is take a deep breath, be patient and trust Allah that He will In sha Allah help us make it to the end. I heard it somewhere that life is like a

Month of Sha’baan

Sha’baan is awesome and here’s why – find out! I heard fasting in Sha’baan is supposed to be awesome. What’s the deal? Check it out! So the Prophet (Peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) used to fast in the month of Sha’baan quite regularly. Here are the details: * ‘Aa’ishah (may Allaah be pleased with her) said: “The Messenger (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) used to fast until we thought he would never break his fast, and not fast until we thought he would never fast. I never saw the Messenger of Allaah fasting for an entire month except in Ramadaan, and I never saw him fast more than he did in Sha’baan.” (Narrated by al-Bukhaari, no. 1833; Muslim, no. 1956). * Usaamah ibn Zayd (may Allaah be pleased with them both) said: “I said, ‘O Messenger of Allaah, I do not see you fasting in any other month like you fast in Sha’baan.’ He said, ‘That is a month to which people do not pay attention, between Rajab and Ramadaan, and it is a month in which deeds are lifted up to the Lord of the Worlds. I like for my deeds to be lifted up when I am fasting.’” (Narrated by al-Nasaa’i, see Saheeh al-Targheeb wa’l-Tarheeb, page 425). * Ibn Rajab (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: “Fasting in Sha’baan is better than fasting in the Sacred Months, and the best of voluntary fasts are those that are (observed in the

Summer Camp ’13 (For Sisters)

Assalam u ‘alaykum. Youth Club is organizing a summer camp for sisters that comprises of lots of interesting categories. It’s from June 10th to July 4th, Mondays to Thursdays from 5-7 pm. Venue is Farooqia Masjid Hall for ladies in F-6/1, Islamabad. But it’s the categories that are most interesting. Here’s a brief overview of them: 1. The summer camp’s going to have Wing Chun training. Wing Chun is basically Chinese martial art and self-defense. Learning self-defense has plenty of benefits. The most obvious one is that it helps in protecting oneself in untoward situations. But then, it’s also a form of worship. Because your body has a right on you and you’re learning to protect your body. Also, you can use it against enemies or protecting other people. Moreover, Wing Chun makes you strong and active. (What kind of exercise doesn’t?) An active body can worship Allah with more concentration and ease. Not to forget the famous narration of Prophet Muhammad sallallaahu ‘alaihi wassalam, “The strong (active) believer is better and more beloved to Allah than the weak believer, while there is good in both.” (Muslim) An active body does not sink into a bad mood easily. People who do exercise stay more happy and contented than those who don’t. It also releases tension, doctors recommend exercise to those in depression. It also makes you feel good about yourself and increases your self esteem. Okay, I can just go on with benefits of exercise, and then self-defense? Let’s

Gone with the Wind

Sometimes when I’m alone, I let my imagination run wild, My mind wanders through deserts, I let the sand be my guide I hear the hooves of horses, impatiently stamping the ground They wait for the command of the leader, awaiting just a sound I see in the eyes of warriors, bravery and determination Their fearlessness comes from fear of the Master of creation They conquer land upon land, pursuing no personal gain Persia, Rome, Egypt, all for establishing Allah’s name I also see the rulers in streets of these great kingdoms Dressed in rags, nothing to eat, yet their hearts brim with wisdom Both rich and poor of the nation, lead such simple lives Working for an honest penny, they don’t know the meaning of lies I see seekers of knowledge everywhere, thirsty and eager Striving to learn night and day, though resources are meagre One man travels 700 miles, just for listening to a single Hadith He does not have a car or camel, he travels without any ease Corruption and dishonesty, their dictionary has not these words Muslims they are, they submit, they do not mock or curse Pleasing the Lord of the Worlds is their only goal They do not bow in front of humans, free are their souls Suddenly I snap out of my vision, I wake up to today ‘Where have those Muslims gone?’, I cry out in dismay

Summer in Pakistan

The one and only thing that is constant in our lives is change. The night and days alter, the weeks and months pass by and the seasons come and go. Allah Subhaanahu wa Ta’ala has not created a single thing without purpose, so the change, in itself, also has a purpose. The change perhaps is a blessing in disguise. It teaches us that nothing in life is permanent. This life, this Dunya, is not permanent. In fact it is meant to change. Time runs and before we knew it, June is right here. It started in March when the spring was subsided before it could officially depart. With the blazing sun and with markets oozing with lawn collections in every other city across Pakistan, summer set in. Summer in Pakistan comes with scorching sun, excessive load-shedding, lawn collections, ice creams & beverages and eternal love for mangoes. And well, a lot of complaining about how hard and tough summer is. This year the complain has transformed into a concern about upcoming Ramadan (uff itni germi mei rozay kesay rakhain gay?) – “How are we ever going to fast in this extreme heat?” Well this summer let’s not complain, and for change let us rejuvenate our Iman by following these DO’s and DON’Ts. Keep a positive attitude. 🙂 Don’ts: 1)      Be lazy / procrastinate / miss Salah. 2)      Wear revealing lawn clothing or half/quarter sleeves in public (for women). Rasool Allah SallAllaahu Alaiyhi Wasallam cursed the women who wore clothes but

A Memorable Morning

So I was about to go to sleep and tell my friends to wake me up at Fajr when the electricity went. This doesn’t happen usually at GIKI so most of us came out of the rooms. I turned off the light and fan switches, wore my sandals, turned the torch on in my awesome Nokia mobile having a torch that works, picked up a packet of Catty Chins (Cheese) by Super Crisp (man they’re yummy) and went out of my room. I sat for a while outside on the hostel stairs looking towards the sky (crazy about stargazing). It was quite dark and it seemed really nice, so calm and serene. And I thought to myself that what would it like be at the time of the Prophet (SallAllaahu Alaiyhi Wasallam)? They would have this peace everyday. No pollution, clear sky, no internet to keep them distracted, all connected to nature you know. It must have been amazing. So I finished my snack and went to the mosque. There was no one there at that time. After a while a junior came and we talked a bit and the Azaan started in different mosques around us. So we decided since the guy who usually gives it is not here yet we should go ahead. So for the first time in 4 years of my stay in GIKI, I gave the Azaan. It felt good Alhamdulillah except for the fact that there was no electricity! Anyway, I lied down
