The Book That Doesn’t Leave Out Anything

By Jawwad Ahmed Picture this: There is a book in your hand. When you first get hold of it, you wonder what it is about. It doesn’t have the usual ‘about this book’ part on the hardback cover, so you open it somewhere in the middle. You read a few lines, and you gasp. You are astonished. You really didn’t think you’d read this. Not now. Not here. You flip over a few pages and read a couple more lines. You do this a third time, and then again – each time, your heart beat increases. You scream out loud. Suddenly, something clicks. You’ve figured out what’s happening. ‘…And they will say, “Oh, woe to us! What is this book that leaves nothing small or great except that it has enumerated it?” And they will find what they did present [before them]…’ [Quran; 18:49] This is the Day of Judgment. And THIS is your book of deeds. *** You open your book again and read about the time you sneaked a peek at a friend’s exam paper during the finals. Math paper, it says… A day in May. Sure the friend didn’t mind, but Allah had it recorded anyway. A few days later, you were ogling a certain girl, again. A full 4 minutes and 37.06 seconds of just sitting there and staring. And you thought you could justify it as the ‘first glance’. The day after that, you read on, you used a bit of filthy language mid conversation- for no

A Morning with Nature

By Umme Aisha When I woke up for Fajr this morning, I decided to do a little experiment. Instead of going straight back to bed once I had prayed, I thought I’d spend the early hours of the morning doing something productive. But the question that immediately popped into my head was: What do I do instead?  Not wanting to give myself a chance to think about this too deeply, I was quickly on the way to my laptop- thinking: ‘I read Qur’an just before I slept; how about I work online for a bit and then read a little more Qura’n once I’m done?’ Apparently we plan, but Allah has His own plans- and those are the best plans. So I was busy working on Facebook (read: wasting my time) when I suddenly came across this video all about how our electronic lives are harming and affecting our real lives. Feeling slightly guilty, I shut my laptop off and wondered whether this was true for me.  The first and most obvious excuse that came to mind was, “NO, I use my Facebook solely for Dawah purposes. I share things related to the Quran and Sunnah on Facebook and I read about Islam over there. Don’t I always ‘like’ things that are Islamic and support worthy causes/Facebook groups etc?’ With that I mentally patted myself on my back. Such an amazing model Muslim I was! My inner voice (zameer) chose precisely that moment to speak up: “How much of

What Are You Doing to Yourself?

By Umm Ibrahim You love to whine about how this fickle person ignores you, that arrogant one oppresses you, and that obnoxious one mistreats you. But do you have a worse enemy than your own self? Aren’t you busy plotting against your own self day and night? Just see how you miss out on the joys and pleasures of this world and the next, through sinning! Yes, you actually miss out on this world too, when you sin! Allah says: “And whatever of misfortune befalls you, it is because of what your hands have earned.  And He pardons much.” [Ash-Shura 42:30] Sins have very harmful effects on our individual and collective lives, in this world as well as in the next.  Entire books have been written on this subject. The very brief list below has been derived from the works of Ibn al-Qayyim. Although sins of all natures have direct or indirect impacts on our lives, the following list covers some very basic ones: 1)      You are deprived of knowledge Could those ‘minor’ sins perhaps be the reason why you are finding it so difficult to learn? Could it be the gossiping and backbiting?  Sins dull your intellect, make you forget what you memorized from the Quran, and make you averse to learning religious knowledge. Hence, if you want to learn and elevate your intellect, it is not just enough to read books and sign up for every online course; you need to stay away from sins. 2)      You

Moving Towards Progress

It’s not very healthy to stay up late, But it does have some advantages, I’m sure you can relate. For the time when you’re alone, you can think about your life, Get to set your priorities, know the purpose for which you strive, Because you’re more than just a bee, that’s working in a hive, Got to meet expectations, just so you can survive. Such has become our life, working like a machine, Day in and day out, so your achievements can be seen. It’s like chasing a dream, only one that seems real, Where we’ve learned to invent, but forgotten how to feel. The technology around us has made our senses numb, Our phones are now smart but our people are getting dumb.     If you ask someone their purpose of life, they say they’re not sure, “I have a house and a job, what could one want more?” You’re expected to go by the norms, tagged weird if you don’t follow, People not having peace of mind thinking your life is hollow. We’ve made science our judge in all that we know, Seeing only perfections and not a single flaw.     What good are our inventions, if we don’t use them to recognize the One? Besides whom worthy of worship is no One. The progress is good as long as we’re aware, That we need to be serious about the coming affair. So we stop and stare, see if we’re guarding our prayer, Before

Are You Ready to Become #Sinless

Failure… The word echoes around inside your head. You’re a failure. You’ve fallen back into sin… You gave into temptation. How will you face Allah now? Might as well just give everything else up too, starting with your beard (or your hijab). No point looking like a Muslim and deceiving people into thinking that you’re better than you actually are. And then your prayers. They go next. ‘Cause of course, your heart can’t have truly been in the right place if those five prayers didn’t stop you from committing sin. And so on.  An entire chain of events unfolds from a single act of sin. Is self-pity really the right way to handle sin? Does committing sin make you a sinner- or should it motivate you to do better the next time you face temptation to break Allah’s laws? Allah lays out the solution in the Quran: “… except for those who  repent, believe and do righteous work.  For them Allah will replace their evil deeds with good. And ever is Allah Forgiving and Merciful.” (Quran, 25:70) This month we’ll be looking at sin from a completely different perspective. This month we’ll work on facing temptations the correct way, and becoming bigger, better individuals (InshaAllah). This month, we proudly bring to you the next blog theme…*drumroll* S I N L E S S Many people today believe that sinning (in some way or the other) has become completely inevitable.  Some would argue we are living in sin towns, and sin cities, where sin is just another

To Be Sinless, Or To Sin Less

By Zaynub Zafar Attitude 1: ” Oh no! I’ve done it yet again. And after all those promises to Allah- there’s no point trying to stop.!…” Attitude 2: “It’s OK, no big deal really. I mean sure, it’s bad, but it’s a minor sin. Besides, everyone does it. I will repent later. Can’t be that bad…” We have two groups of people (not just these two…), when it comes to the concept of sinning. Because it is Shaytan’s way, always, to either make the believer very laid-back about sinning regarding deen (as in the case of attitude 2), or extremely zealous (attitude 1). Needless to say, both are unhealthy for our religious commitments; moderation, my dear readers, is the key. At times, for that mental satisfaction of ‘saving’ ourselves from sinning, we feel it is alright to commit minor sins here and there. Our attitude is very relaxed; we do them comfortably and don’t even cringe. Au contraire’, such a phenomena can also have reverse effects, by making us extremely conscious about sinning, which is good, of course. But, it becomes a nuisance when even a single slip leads us to hopelessness and despair, and shatters our resolve. Because we want to be perfectionists. Flawless. Angelic. Impeccable- something that is quite impossible. What then, should be the behaviour of a Muslim towards sinning? Well, simply put, we are required to ‘sin less’ and not be sinless. Confused?  Let me explain further. Allah never asked us to be perfect, all we were

Diary of A Spoilt Brat

By Umm Ibrahim The ever-alert guard slides open the gate, and my chauffeur-driven car glides in smoothly to a view of lush green grass, and all the colors of spring in bloom. I step out and look around at the gardeners busy working away in the sun. “I have to leave in 30 minutes again.” I instruct the driver. Opening the front door, I make a mental list of all the things I need to do in these 30 minutes, before I head to my friend’s place. It is simply a list of all the orders I need to give. I dial the maid’s extension and the maid responds on the first bell. “Come inside please. I need to get my clothes ironed.” “Ji, baji.” She complies obediently. In less than 2 minutes, she’s inside. I hand her the clothes, and ring the chef’s extension. I tap my fingers impatiently as the bell rings 6 or 7 times. I’m getting irritated. “Where on earth is this man?” He picks up the phone and I can sense the hint of drowsiness in his voice. “Did I wake him up from his afternoon nap?” I wonder. I give him instructions to fix me a quick snack. After 10 minutes, the clothes are ironed. The maid is given new instructions to clean up my messed-up room. The bedroom phone rings. It’s the chef: “Food is on the dining table, Madam.” Too lazy to go downstairs, I say, “Tell the butler to bring

The Best Song Ever

By Saadia Humayun I am the sort of person who can pull up a song from any word in a conversation. And can also pull up a Quranic verse from the same convo. No, I do not have acoustic bipolar, thank you very much. It just depends on which side of the bed I woke up that day. I had to call my demons before writing this particular piece. To revisit what it used to be like listening to music oblivious to everything else- but those beats. Heck, those intoxicating beats… ‘Such sweet compulsion doth in music lie’ as John Milton puts it. And it is a sweet, deadly seduction… *** Imagine the horror of waking up on the Last Day, right next to Rihanna. Or maybe behind Fifty Cent. And there’s that One Direction you worshipped all your life. All your celebs resurrected and rounded in one bloc. You feel the sun burning you to nothingness. Suddenly, you wonder where Rihanna kept her Umbrella. The thought sounds as useless as the song was meaningless, back in that other world. And Akon saying you can put the blame on me, doesn’t sound convincing enough anymore or apologetic, for that matter. You find yourself in a live nightmare feat. Lil Wayne. And Jay Sean reassures you in a drunken stupor, that It ain’t the end of the world but you know better. You were Starstruck. You had followed these people back then, lived by their rules and now you all get to

Peace!

Peace! The whole world’s hankering after it. Today we have peace conventions, peace rallies, peace slogans, and yet, there is no peace. We are insecure in our own minds, in our own homes, in our own homeland. Amazing though it may sound but we don’t really need to go into that much hullabaloo to get peace in our lives. That is because its perfect recipe was given by a great leader years ago. A new state had just been formed, he entered it and said, “Spread Salaam…” *1 Just like that! So simple. Yes, you guessed it. The great leader was none other than our beloved Prophet Muhammad sallallaahu ‘alaihi wassalam. Salaam is the salutation that Muslims greet each other with, when they meet. In effect, they say: Assalam u ‘alaykum, which means ‘peace be upon you’. This great leader didn’t just state, ‘say’ salaam, rather he said, ‘spread’ salaam. Do you see the depth in his choice of words? Spread means to disseminate widely. Imagine that! Imagine us wishing peace to any and everyone we met. Would there be any discord or bad feelings left, let alone insecurities? Because if you just had to wish peace to everyone, you couldn’t hate them at the same time. That would be a contradiction in and of itself. Today we’re scared of our own neighbors. We don’t even know them. Why? We never talked to them. If we followed the rule of saying salaam to everyone, we’d come to know them,

Journey of Steadfastness- Ten Boosters

#StayStrong was an exciting theme on the blog, with our writers sharing their thoughts and experiences candidly. Steadfastness (Isteqamah) is something that Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala has made obligatory upon the believers. Man has been created weak; therefore Allah has also taught means to achieve steadfastness. Fancy catch phrases may sound appealing, but when it comes to the nitty-gritty of actually doing things, one does need to employ boosters to stay on track and keep going. From the writings of esteemed scholars, the Blog Team has extracted and compiled ten boosters to help us all to #StayStrong on our respective journeys. 1-      Clinging to the Quran The Quran is the strong rope of Allah. Whoever clings to it, Allah will save him from slipping. Allah has stated that one of the reasons why the Quran was revealed in stages was to help the Prophet (sallalahu alaihi wasallam) to stay firm. “..Thus (the Quran is sent down in parts), that We may strengthen your heart thereby. And We have revealed it to you gradually, in stages.” (Surah al-Furqan: 32) The Quran equips you with sound understanding and values, which enable you to make correct decisions and stick to them resolutely. It also gives tranquility to your heart, and helps to refute the doubts stirred up by those who want to steer you away from the straight path. 2-      Obeying Allah and Doing Righteous Deeds Every act of obedience and every good deed takes you one step closer to steadfastness. Allah
