Review: First Ever YC Book Club!

Aymun Sajid The Book Club is the first ever regular YC event I attended. I’m the stereotypical introverted artist-writer kind of person who’d rather read or draw than share common space with other humans. I’d just taken a gap year after 12th grade to try and figure out what my complicated self should do next. So when I dragged myself out of the house to attend this circle a few minutes’ drive away in Islamabad, I didn’t really know what to expect.  I was directed to the basement by the friendly volunteer. With the bag holding my copy of Allah Loves slung over my shoulder, I clanked down the metal staircase and slipped in. It was…kind of dark at first. But then I turned the corner and there was the Book Club room.  I have to admit, I was…impressed. It looked like something straight out of an instagram post, with fairy lights strung up, adorable circular cushions, even a photocard moodboard.  There were a handful of sisters, to begin with, and it was obvious they all knew each other from before. When introductions began, I was – a bit awed, to be honest. They all had talents and impressive goals, an artist, a baker, a lawyer, med student – I wondered if I would be able to fit in. We agreed to go with the format of reading the book together.   ‘Allah Loves’ is a short yet comprehensive book by Omer Sulaiman. The book was written simple and easy

Dua: the best therapy

By Aymun Sajid I’ve learnt this lesson the hard way. And I still often forget it. Perhaps reminding you will help me remind myself.  There are two ways to deal with a problem.  The first one is the path I originally took (and one I still struggle to leave). You can ignore your trial. Fake it till you make it (or, hah, even if you don’t). And why won’t you ignore it? There are thousands and thousands of distractions available, the best one being a 4.7 inch wide glass screen we all seem to have available in our pockets. We can drown. Drown, deep, deep into just chatting, binge-watching, basically just looking for the dopamine hit. Or picking up any other activity and getting lost in it. Just feeding our nafs, nurturing it only, and forgetting all about our Ruh. This can cause horrible results – ruining our sleep schedules, messing up our nutritional intakes, and worst of all, breaking our Imaan. Think for a moment about what godless people turn to. Drugs, alcohol, haram relationships…it actually is the end of the same road. Chasing after any spec of comfort, any distraction they can find. Imagine if someone has a ticking time bomb in their car’s trunk, and they know there’s a time bomb in their car’s trunk, and the strategy they decide to adopt is…ignore it. Turn on loud music and start headbanging. Start pretending it’s not there, because that would be too stressful.    Crazy as it may

The Opportunity of a Lifetime

“Make this Ramadan the time when we finally make an everlasting change. Our intention should be that we will continue the good work way after this one month. Make some promises to ourselves that this Ramadan we will finally make that change in our lives that we’ve been thinking about for years. The mindset should be that I will fast and worship Allah not because my family does it or all of our mates do it but because it is incumbent upon me to do this sort of worship.” Read more on YC Blog! #Ramadan #YouthClubPk #YouthClubBlog #Habits #Ramadan2022

Connecting to the Quran in the last Ashra

Ramadan is the month for celebrating the Quran which was sent to guide and reform mankind. In this month, we read and hear the Quran more than any other time of the year. Yet why is that despite such exposure to Allah’s words, we don’t get that deeper connection with Allah? As soon as the new moon is sighted, the Quran is put on the shelf again. Certainly it is not merely a book to be read and re-read. How can we build an enduring bond with the book of Allah which does not end with the month but lasts way beyond?

Ramadan 2022 is nearly here!

Haniya Hasan Ramadan 2022 is nearly here!  And can I say how excited I am that this Ramadan might finally be the one in which there are no COVID restrictions stopping me from going to Taraweeh or hosting iftar parties for my family and friends! I have written in the past about how Ramadan really brings out that communal spirit because everyone around is vividly striving for the same goals as you.  As I grow older, Ramadan has become a month that I seek out to help me reroute my life back to its main priority: submitting to Allah SWT completely. In the lead-up to Ramadan, I am so happy about opportunities to pray longer, worship harder, and get in the right zone for the remaining year. Every year after Ramadan, the fervour and zeal of Ramadan fade a few weeks after Ramadan ends, and slowly that flame that Ramadan ignites is subdued. So by the time Ramadan comes back up again, I am usually feeling super guilty for not keeping up to any of my post-Ramadan resolutions but I am also happy to get to work on them again during Ramadan.  So in the hunt to get into the right zone before Ramadan starts, I am first of all investing in an excellent Ramadan planner, and what’s more excellent than an exquisite Ramadan Planner designed by YC itself? It is the most thoughtful planner ever with every possibility covered so you can track and keep yourself honest within

A Question of Deen and Dunya: How to Follow Religion Today?

Most of us struggle to make time for our religious obligations in the midst of our wordly lives. Today, the majority of Muslims look for an answer to this pivotal question, how to strike a balance between practicing Deen and living in the Dunya? This is a query not just related to contemporary times. It arose in the early stages of Islam as well.  A Companion of the Prophet, Hanzala (RA) feared that he had become a hypocrite because, during his day-to-day activities pertaining to his family or his business, thoughts of Allah would slip from his mind. He shared this concern with Abu Bakr (RA) who admitted to feeling the same. So they both went to the Prophet (PBUH) and Hanzala (RA) inquired: “Allah’s Messenger, when we are in your company, we are reminded of Hell-Fire and Paradise as if we are seeing them with our own eyes, but whenever we go away from you and attend to our wives, children and business, much of these things go out of our minds.” To read what the Prophet PBUH responded with, read our new article by Muhammad Saddam on balancing practicing religion with dunya.

Am I Loving Myself Right?

By Aymun Sajid  You’d think that global pop musicians, athletes, Instagram influencers, and YouTubers would all be talking about different concepts. That they’d be promoting different ideas, different topics – right? But there’s one conversation that you’ll now find in every corner of social media, that even some of our YC speakers have addressed – that is the intriguing, appealing concept of self-love.  Self-care. Loving myself. Be kind to yourself. These phrases all capture the concept of ‘regarding one’s own happiness or advantage’. Some habits associated with this concept are things like: eating what you want, not overworking yourself, learning to say ‘no’ to others for your own wellbeing, and not being too harsh on your own mistakes.  Youth like me are especially attracted towards this concept. After battling so many peer pressures, trying to please so many people – considering the notion that perhaps ‘the only person I should please is myself’ is pretty relieving and refreshing. But as Muslims, we always put the examples of Rasulullah PBUH and the Sahabah first. So what did they do in this regard? Rasulullah PBUH, as we know, would stand up long hours of the night until his feet became swollen, although he had been forgiven of all his sins. When asked about this, his answer was, “Shall I not be a thankful slave (of Allah)?” (Sahih Bukhari 6471)   We know Umar RA would roam around the streets at night, looking for citizens to help. That he would say he is

Pursuit of Success

By Saima Shahzad People from different walks of life have a similar idea of success i. e. to own a happy family, a progressing career and a trendy lifestyle. In this race of getting ahead of each other, people tend to forget that their pursuit of success is faulty. It doesn’t sound wise to choose what is short-lived, temporary and comes with many drawbacks at the expense of something that is forever, more luxurious and appealing to the next level.Real Success is the luxurious life of Jannah which is ignored all around us. Immense love of this world creates an illusion in people’s minds and makes them think that the only reality is what exists around us, not what is unseen.  Resultantly, the exhausting competition without any everlasting outcome continues, until the time comes when one realizes the fact stated in Qur’an: قَدْ أَفْلَحَ مَن تَزَكَّىٰ Successful indeed are those who purify themselves [Surah Al’ Ala, 87:14] And it hits hard. The key to the ultimate success according to the One Who created us is so different from what is fed in our minds and hearts in schools, colleges and universities. The real success isn’t getting a spacious villa, expensive cars or heavy bank balance, but purification of the soul is the success one should long and struggle for.  When a gardener plants a mango tree in his garden , some weeds and bushes may grow around it, leading to hindrance in the tree’s growth by sharing it’s nutrients and

Allah Does Not Answer My Prayers!

By Sumbul Saleem Khanzada After a point in my life, I started believing that nothing matters more than one’s inner peace… Sometimes, I miss the older me. But the fact is, I have started admiring my new version. I don’t play the victim in my life no matter what I go through and I never will! One thing that helped me deal with everything is my faith in Allah… It’s not like I always have the circumstances turned into my favor.   There were a few desires that I really wished to get fulfilled. For a few, I did  every possible thing to make them work for me. But it never happened the way I desired. To be very honest, I cried to the core of my heart but I never let those situations break me, because this is not why Allah sent me in this world.   During my MBA, I had a course on personal development, where my teacher used to give examples of the righteous companions of the Prophet PBUH who had unwavering trust in Allah at all times, even in dire circumstances of war, poverty, misery, pain, loss etc. You name it, they went through it. Yet they never forsake Allah SWT.  Now look around your life, what do we usually do when we don’t get our wishes fulfilled? We start questioning, “why are our prayers not being answered?” Just look at the question and ask yourself, how easy it is for us to raise this question in our mind.

Heading on the Straight Path

This world is a test for us. As Allah Almighty says in the Quran, “He who created death and life to test you as to which of you is best in deed…” (Surah Mulk, 67:2).  Tests are not easy; they are challenging and require preparation. There are many obstacles that hinder our progress towards paradise. Satan is our biggest enemy; his whole mission is to prevent us from going to heaven.

A Struggling Muslim

By Maheen Ali We are living in an age of hustle, competition, and chaos. Adults stuck in a cycle of 9 to 5 jobs, youngsters struggling to balance sleep and study while trying to build a perfect future, and housewives running to complete their household chores. Everyone seems to be a part of a race that no one knows will reach its end or not. There is constant anxiety and fear of not completing our tasks on time. We are trying to fulfill our temporal dreams and goals while forgetting about our spiritual and religious goals. While rushing to perform our tasks, we fail to lend a helping hand to someone desperate or forget about the little good deeds that could save us in the end. This materialistic struggle and obsession over worldly affairs are destroying the better part of humanity’s religion.  Surely, our youth, health, wealth, and free time are blessings from Allah Almighty but we will be asked to account for how we spent them in life. Human life is a gift from Allah and soon He will take it back, hence, it ought to be used according to His desire and requirement. Forgetting about our ultimate end is the basic and biggest mistake of our generation. As Muslims, we believe in the Day of Judgment along with the destination of heaven and hell, but we fail to remember it in our daily lives. Lost in worldly pleasures, striving to achieve our sublunary dreams, we forget that
