Q&A with Ustadh Wael Ibrahim

Wael Ibrahim is a John Maxwell Certified speaker, coach, and a teacher. He is the author of a series of motivational books titled ‘CHANGE’ which provide a support system to those who are addicted to Internet, especially pornography. He is a professional trainer on various subjects such as self-development, public speaking, communication skills, leadership, and life-coaching. In the past 10 years, he has delivered hundreds of lectures, workshops, courses, keynote speeches and trainings across many countries around the globe. Currently, he is a student counsellor and the Head of Islamic Studies at the Australian Islamic College in Western Australia. In 2019, Youth Club organised for Ustadh Wael to give a series of lectures and workshops in Lahore, Pakistan, that focused on raising awareness and dealing with solutions for pornography addictions. Find out below what Ustadh Wael had to say about life-coaching, travelling the world, and his advice for young Muslims of today! You have counselled many through your vocation as a life coach. Who has been the most influential life counsellor for you in your life?  I prefer the term life coaching than counselling, as there’s a huge difference between both professions. In my profession as a certified Life Coach, I have met many people who have been influential. One of them is Sharon Pearson, of the Coaching Institute, who taught me the concept of championing one another. In other words, to be happy with the success of others and to celebrate that success with them as if it

To Plastic or Not to Plastic

By Sidra Adil Ever since the advent of the industrial age, humans have been in pursuit of achieving ultimate convenience. In this quest, we have literally come up with an indispensable product. This product can be found everywhere – from toothbrushes and mobile phones to product packaging. Plastic has become such an integral part of our lives that we are unable to depict a world without it. But we are now beginning to see how it is being misused worldwide, even though it can be recycled, and has begun to pose a threat to wild and marine life. Imagine yourself walking into a store where you end up buying a plastic bottle of water to quench your thirst. Once you’ve drunk from that bottle, what do you do? If you’re a responsible Pakistani, you’ll throw it in the trash can (which isn’t much help either since you are ultimately contributing to an excess of plastic on this planet). If you’re somebody who isn’t as bothered about keeping the streets clean, you’ll throw that plastic bottle on the side of the road. Plastic is made of chains of hydrocarbons that are held together by one of the strongest forces in nature and you need high temperature and pressure conditions to break it down and convert it into simpler molecules like water and carbon dioxide. Such conditions don’t exist in nature and thus we only have estimates of how long it takes for a plastic bottle to degrade – from a

A Sacrifice of A Different Kind

By Zahra Nayyar Bismillah,  When I think of the month of Dhul Hijjah, I immediately envision ihram-clad Muslims circling the majestic Kaabah and the echoes of the Labaik.  Then it hits me, another year and my desires to behold this amazing experience in person remain incomplete. Many of us feel a kind of anguish, a deep yearning to visit the House of Allah (SWT) but cannot for one reason or another. It becomes easy for us to think that the efforts that are required of the pilgrims are not required from us and so we tend to take it easy. But, this year, I took the time to reflect upon what this month means to me and one word resounded in my mind loud and clear; sacrifice. This is one of the main themes of this season of worship that is upon us. We commemorate the awe-inspiring sacrifice of Ibrahim (AS), whose life is an exemplary account of sacrifice. But there is one particular sacrifice that Allah (SWT) accepted from him and that is when asked to sacrifice his own son, he and his son both were satisfied upon this command from Allah (SWT). They proceeded to fulfill it and as soon as the knife came down upon young Ismael’s neck, Allah (SWT) pleased with their commitment to Him, replaced Ismael with a ram.  I’ve noticed that when certain religious rituals are part of our practice since our childhood, we tend to see them as merely an event or

7 Ways to Kick-start your Day

By Syed Haseeb This is Planet Earth. (Well, sort of) There were 7,657,723,823 Earthlings dwelling on this planet by the time this sentence was being written. As of December 2013, 4.3 babies are born each second. Now, that is a whole lot of people. In this dog-eat-dog world, how do we come across on top? What makes a person like you or me successful? The simple answer is Habits.  Habits make or break us. It is the accumulation of our daily habits that craves our destiny – our life is our typical day in miniature. Show me your morning routine, and I’ll show you your future.  In fact, a solid morning routine can get us ready for an awesome day in which we can showcase our true potential.  Mornings are the time when our energy, focus, decision-making skills, and intelligence are at the prime, optimal level. That is why we should use this time to our avail, and not be a complete slouch in the morning. “And do not send away those who call upon their Lord morning and afternoon, seeking His countenance…”  [Surah Al-An ‘am, 52] Here’s how you can super-charge your day by giving yourself a head-start in the morning: 1. Make your Bed, and Head for Fajr Nip the laziness in the bud. Do your most difficult tasks at the dawn of the day. And what is more difficult than getting out of the warm bed and doing wudhu for Fajr? When you do that, you

Ramadan Reflections 2019: Asking Allah (SWT)

By Haniya Hasan. As of tonight, the first 10 days of Ramadan have passed already and this kind of makes me wish that time stood still in Ramadan. I love this time of the year when everyone is engrossed in prayer and reflection; when the air is thick with the remembrance of Allah. In Ramadan, I get to grow closer to Allah (SWT) thanks to the outpouring of opportunities to learn and discover more and more about our deen, especially the Qu’ran. This Ramadan, I have started listening to Sister Mahnoor Arif’s daily online interactive Quran discussions on the Youth Club Sisters group. Plus, possibly my favourite scholar, Sheikh Abu Eesa is also posting daily Tadabbur points on the Quran on his Facebook page. One of the major discussion points that they both discussed was du’a (asking Allah), in the context of Ayah 186 of Surah al-Baqarah: “I am near. I respond to those who make du’a to Me.” [Surah Baqarah; 186] A major part of Ramadan is making du’a, supplicating to Allah (SWT), and asking for His mercy and forgiveness. And this part of Ramadan is also sometimes taken as granted, as just a routine. Through my study of the commentary on this verse, and through what I read and listened, I have noted down some of my thoughts and lessons that I learnt this week about du’a: Du’a is central to all acts of worship. Allah SWT is pleased when human asks Him again and again. It is

Staying True to Yourself.

By Abdullah Tariq It is often said that this new generation, of which we consider ourselves to be a part of, sometimes even with a certain degree of pride, has to face different challenges than the previous ones. As a part of this new generation, often referred to as the ‘Millennials’, we face a unique challenge because of our Muslim identity which is to preserve it and still thrive in a world whose norms and values are often contradicting with what we’re supposed to value, feel and do as a Muslim.  As young human beings, we are instinctively pushed to try to feel as a part of a whole, a valued member of a community and being recognized as someone who has successfully ‘blended in’ among our peers. This sounds not so difficult to do so, right? Well, not so right when the people around you, specially your family and friends don’t share the same values and ideals as you. This can happen to you or to anyone who is trying to or wants to preserve his/her Muslim identity in the meantime. This happens when things that are considered fun, entertainment, cool, normal or okay are in a head on collusion with the Islamic values and principles. And when you’re surrounded in an atmosphere like that, you might start to feel that nearly everything out there is haram or ‘not right’. You might forget that it’s not that everything is forbidden or haram, rather what little is forbidden/haram has

WOC2019: Interview with Brother Nadeem Ashraf

Brother Nadeem is a mentor, trainer, and an English teacher in the UK. He is one of the official speakers of Youth Club’s Winds of Change Tour 2019 and has been a constant support in YC’s Da’wah mission. He has studied politics at TVU, London and gained an English teaching certificate from the Cambridge University Board of Accreditation. He has worked with major organisations like Amnesty International, the International Red Cross, UNICEF, the British High Commission, and Qassem University in Saudi Arabia, among others. He loves nothing more than being random, interacting with the public, and engaging in deep conversations. Here are a few questions we asked him about his experience as a speaker in this year’s Youth Club’s WOC2019 Tour! 1. What inspired you to come to Pakistan to participate in YC’s Winds of Change Tour 2019? Many reasons! But for the sake of brevity I’d say as someone who has been on almost all WOC tours including the very first one in 2012,  I feel a part and parcel of this tour! There’s a lot of personal history and memories for me. I have benefited from these tours immensely in terms of inspiration and knowledge, Alhumdulillah! 2. As you are heavily involved in Da’wah activities abroad as well as in Pakistan, how does the Da’wah scene in Pakistan compare to that of the UK or other countries? This is a very deep question, requiring an essay but briefly I would say other than the obvious factors for

Ramadan Journaling: A Colourful Guide!

By Sara Ahmed. Realising that this may potentially be my last free Ramadan before I get caught up in the whirlwind of a medical house-job and other ‘adulting’ responsibilities, I’ve put in more effort than ever to plan it out. I’ve always been big on pretty stationery and planning gear but if you aren’t – that’s totally alright. I’m not here to intimidate you but to share some of my ideas in the hope that they may inspire you to create your own customised plan for Ramadan 2019. Apart from having a list of goals for Ramadan 2019, it is important for me to have the end goal in plain-sight, so I chose to write a huge “Bloom from Within” on one page – because that’s what it’s all about, isn’t it? When your spirit starts rotting from inside- which I’m sure you may be experiencing as Ramadan approaches – prayers start becoming heavy, you snap back at your family, you can’t manage your addictions, you can’t get yourself to make dua and you wonder how in the world you are going to fix the mess you’ve made out of yourself. But if we dedicate a few days of Ramadan to let our spirits bloom- it permeates outwards into every single aspect of our lives and doing ‘the good stuff’ after Ramadan suddenly becomes much easier. Here’s a numbered breakdown of my goals, why I chose to focus on them, and how they fit into the theme of Bloom

Part 2: Do you fear death?

By Maria Javaid. This is a two-part series on the concept of death. This is the second part. Check out Part One here! Having understood that death is an inevitability, what can we do to challenge the notion of death to lead a successful Muslim life? Make peace with death Although no one can have the full surety of entering Jannah, it is best to lead our lives in a way that we are satisfied to a degree, by our current struggle of living in accordance to Allah’s commands. This would make us peaceful at the thought of our actions being presented to Allah (SWT) and the entire concept of accountability would seem less intimidating. Include Allah’s remembrance in your gatherings It is not prohibited to enjoy fun-filled social interactions, but we must make sure that our gatherings are not completely disconnected with our deen and thus, spiritually meaningless. There should be at least some form of remembrance of our Lord within these gatherings. A useful dua for the expiation of a gathering is; سُبْحـانَكَ اللّهُـمَّ وَبِحَمدِك، أَشْهَـدُ أَنْ لا إِلهَ إِلاّ أَنْتَ أَسْتَغْفِرُكَ وَأَتوبُ إِلَـيْك Subhaanaka Allaahumma wa bihamdika, ‘ash-hadu ‘an laa ‘ilaaha ‘illaa ‘Anta, ‘astaghfiruka wa ‘atoobu ‘ilayka. Glory is to You, O Allah, and praise is to You. I bear witness that there is none worthy of worship but You. I seek Your forgiveness and repent to You. (Sunan At-Tirmidhi). Maintaining a balance between deen and dunya can be done in the form of making duas

Choose your friends wisely.

By Hareem Fatima Abu Huraira (R.A) narrated: Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said:  “Man is upon the religion of their friend, so every one of among you should look upon his friend.” (Sunan al-Tirmidhi, 2378). What does this tell us? 3 things immediately come to mind: 1. Our friend circle is usually made up of like-minded people who share similar interests. 2. We hang out with our friends and like to do activities with them. 3. We are influenced by our friends to do things that we might not do ourselves. Choosing friends is an important thing to do not just for our social well-being but also to help preserve our deen. Friends who encourage good in us are friends who will lead us to a righteous path. To have a good friend is a blessing. An excellent company of friends assures good in a person’s life. So what are good friends? Someone who is obedient to Allah (SWT), follows the commands of Allah (SWT), and who enjoin good and forbids evil. One who possesses good character and is fond of helping others for the sake of Allah (SWT). A good friend is someone who reminds you of Allah not only in your times of hardship but also in your hours of happiness. A good friend will remind you to improve yourself not only for this world but also for the Hereafter. A good friend will protect your dignity in your absence and will be a well-wisher for you.
