What is the importance of self-defense for both boys and girls in today’s age?
Well, in today’s age especially, it extends beyond physical protection. It begins with building self-confidence and self-discipline while instilling a sense of responsibility and personal accountability. Additionally, self-defense enhances overall health and equips individuals to protect themselves in a world where incidents such as snatching and harassment are, unfortunately, common.
Can anyone learn self-defense?
Absolutely! Anyone can learn self-defense, regardless of age or specific prerequisites. This includes young girls, women over 40, and even those above 50. Self-defense training not only builds physical strength but also fosters a determined mindset. The belief that it’s beyond one’s capacity is a misconception; with the right mindset and dedication, anyone can successfully learn it.
How should one start self-defense training?
Starting self-defense training should ideally involve seeking guidance from an in-person trainer. For women, hiring a female trainer is necessary to ensure shariah compliance.
While there is valuable content available on social media platforms, a personal trainer can tailor a workout regimen to an individual’s specific needs and physical capabilities. This personalised approach ensures exercises are safe and appropriate, accommodating factors like body type, flexibility, and overall fitness level, which may not be adequately addressed through generic online content.
What are some of your favorite exercises, and why?
I have a preference for exercises like burpees because they provide an efficient full-body workout with a cardio component, saving time while remaining highly effective. Additionally, I enjoy target punching exercises as they enhance precision and contribute significantly to my self-defense training.
What motivates you to keep fitness a part of your routine?
Investing time in my fitness keeps me mentally and physically refreshed and active. When I miss a workout, I feel noticeably less well, both mentally and physically.
What are the most crucial aspects of a healthy diet that are often overlooked?
One of the most crucial aspects is to maintain proper meal timings, such as having an early dinner and avoiding late-night eating. In addition, prioritising fresh, unprocessed foods, such as fruits and juices, is vital instead of relying on preserved items. Additionally, portion control plays a significant role in maintaining a healthy diet, preventing excessive weight gain, and promoting overall freshness and well-being.
How do you balance your religious and family responsibilities while maintaining a social life and self-defense training?
I’d say it certainly involves careful scheduling. I prioritise my family and adjust my training and social commitments to fit within the time when my children are at school or tuition. However, there are moments when household chores or quality time with my family take precedence over my training of course, and I love to take it that way 🙂
What is the best advice you’ve ever received for training?
The best advice I’ve received for training is to stay constant and patient. This guidance applies not only to me but to all those pursuing self-defense or any endeavor. It emphasises the importance of persistence and understanding that results may not be immediate. Tawakkul (reliance on Allah SWT) is my number one key when it comes to determination and achieving my goals.
What are your top 2 tips for beginners?
- Focus on Building Strength: Building physical strength is essential for self-defense. Strength forms the foundation for various techniques, whether it’s punching, kicking, or grappling. Incorporating weight training into your routine can be beneficial, but it’s crucial to start with bodyweight exercises like push-ups to develop a strong base.
- Master Bodyweight Exercises: Prioritise bodyweight exercises to build functional strength. Push-ups, squats, and planks, among others, help improve overall fitness and provide a solid foundation for more advanced martial arts techniques. Starting with these fundamental exercises enhances your physical capabilities and prepares you for more specialised training.
