Federal Shariat Court Verdict: A battle is won, the war’s still on!

And declare, “Truth has come and falsehood has departed. Indeed, is falsehood (by nature), always bound to depart.” [Quran 17:81] May 19, 2023 — the Federal Shariat Court Islamabad issued a ruling declaring sections 2(f), 3, and 7 of the Transgender Act 2018 incompatible with the interpretation of Islamic principles. The aforementioned sections pertain to matters concerning gender identity, the right to self-perceived gender identity, and inheritance rights for individuals identifying as transgender.

The Christchurch Incident – A Manifestation of Islamophobia

Have we been pointing fingers in the wrong direction?  The Christchurch Incident shook the entire Ummah with grief so profound, most of us had never felt it before. A Christian extremist had martyred more than fifty Muslims, injuring another fifty or so people as he attacked two Mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand. The perpetrator, a 29-year-old white Australian male, an Islamophobe, and a white supremacist proudly pleaded guilty to his crimes when he was arrested, only half an hour after he had fled the scene on March 15, 2019. He wanted to “inflict as many fatalities as possible,” he said later on. The reason? He thought Muslims deserved to be killed this way. Ironically, this event led to an increase in Islamophobic incidents in Australia and New Zealand, making the lives of Aussie and Kiwi Muslims tougher than it already was. This event was not unprecedented in its nature. But the fact that Islamophobia and anti-Muslim sentiment reeked so profusely from it did make it have an impact more profound than the other incidents.   Muslims have long been victimized by Islamophobia, the fear of Islam being exacerbated by the horrific 9/11 event that changed the lives of millions of Muslims across the globe. But, whose fault is it that Muslims are living in such agony in most places on earth? Modern Islamophobia: Who Do We Point Our Fingers At? Living in a Muslim-majority country, we don’t get the heat of Islamophobic incidents. But we do sometimes end up contributing

PSL – The Final Showdown

Fans! Just about a few minutes ago, we all experienced an enthralling final showdown. With zealous emotions, cheerful evenings, bonds of togetherness, and hopes of winning yet again with another year, another tournament comes to an end. Memories? Yes, for sure! We all have enjoyed ourselves in unlimited doses of fun, laughter and excitement throughout the season. And honestly, it’s never bound to the crazy cricket fandom. The unpredictable scores, outstanding performances, social media titbits and players giving in some proud moments surely kept us all hooked, making our Februaries and Marches a little more buzzing. One team soared in elation while the other uplifted themselves in hopes of claiming the trophy next year. And like that, the bittersweet rollercoaster ride finally bid us goodbye leaving us with an opportunity to undergo a highlight reel reflecting on the overall season. Since its inception seven years ago, PSL seasons have always geared a level up. Apart from the gaming side, entertainment has also been the standout spinner keeping the audiences oh-so-excited and ready to jammin. Talk about the grand opening ceremonies, brand new roaring anthems, glamorised celeb fests and swarms of overjoyed audiences. Everything looks good with unicorn glasses on. However, delving deep into the bigger picture, the grainy bumps of the perfect-looking smooth pitch get sieved out and portray a lil disturbing story. How so? Let’s explore! First and foremost, we all know that Pakistan is juggling through the worst times of its history. Surging inflation, unstoppable downsizing, rupee

K-pop: The Dark Side

Today, the K-pop world is celebrating SUGA’s birthday. He’s BTS’s lead rapper and a record-breaking solo artist of his own right. But back in 2012, he was struggling. With no support from his family, he’d been forced to take up a delivery job to make ends meet. During a round he had an accident which dislocated his shoulder. His first thought? “Don’t tell the company.” They could fire him if he was unfit to perform. SUGA debuted, his group beginning as an underdog and then shooting to fame as BTS. For seven whole years, he performed in inexplicable pain with the torn shoulder. It was only during the pandemic in 2019 that he took a hiatus – with many apologies to fans – to undergo surgery.   On a Livestream with her fans, TWICE’s Momo recounted when she lost 7 kilograms in a week at the behest of her label, JYP Entertainment. She survived on one ice cube a day and cried herself to sleep, fearing she might not wake up the next day. Like Momo, K-pop trainees are required to weigh themselves daily and their weights displayed for all to see.  “The depression that has slowly been gnawing away at me has finally overtook me,” Kim Jong-hyun penned in his suicide note. “Becoming famous was probably not my life. It’s funny I was able to endure this much.”  It was 2017. At age 27, Jonghyun was the main vocalist of the wildly successful K-pop band SHINee. He had performed

Sar-e-Rah

In the previous months, there has been enough talk about the trans agenda that has taken over our screens with the release of Joyland. We had the serial Ankahi giving a cheeky thumbs up to Joyland, and now the latest episode of the popular USAID-funded serial Sar-e-Rah! Wait, what is USAID doing here? Read on! Sar-e-Rah deserves accolades for breaking stereotypes and supporting characters struggling against societal norms. The recent episode depicts the struggles of an intersex child. With an extremely toxic stepmother and an unconditionally supportive father, the carefully curated, tear-jerking plot with its heartwarming dialogue delivery hits all the right chords with the audience. Nabeel Zafar seems to be the father every child deserves. However, dig deeper, and you will see some very problematic threads seamlessly weaved in the tapestry. The term transgender and intersex are being used interchangeably by the drama team. This is furthering the already prevalent misconceptions about transgenders and intersex. This confusion can easily be used to manipulate impressionable audiences and to propagate a certain agenda. Let’s understand the terms first. Intersex is a person who is born with an anomaly such as ambiguous genitalia. The ratio of all such people in the whole wide world is actually just 0.018%. Now, this is a natural occurrence, and it can be resolved through medical examinations, which fixates the person in either the male or female group depending upon his or her dominant organs. In Islam, we call them khansa (intersex). Whereas this transgenderism is

Aurat aur Azadi

The world in this fast-paced modern and materialistic era has managed to convince us women that things are their opposites. Our priorities have been turned upside down. Our values are in disarray. We’ve been taught that some of our greatest natural assets and feminine powers are actually our greatest liabilities and weaknesses, and that we need to ruthlessly suppress our natures in order to be more aggressive, abrasive and competitive. We’ve been taught that our protective allies (our male kin: fathers and husbands) are actually all our oppressive enemies, and that instead of welcoming their protection, we need protection from them. (Yes, sad examples exist, but we can’t paint everyone with the same brush.) We’ve been taught that our happiness and liberty comes from outside (the workplace, the streets, the public sphere) and that anything domestic is our prison (the home, the family, the private sphere). We’ve been taught that our worth and self-esteem comes from our financial capability and material possessions, and that our internal stability and immaterial qualities don’t matter. No wonder a society that sees Capital as its God thrives on devaluing the immaterial values we bring to our families. We’ve been taught that the home is our cage, and children are our shackles. We are made to feel that the yardstick of our usefulness is the occupation of jobs that generate income and our wealth status. That the soft and lofty attributes we are inherently endowed with are worthless, let alone sanctified, such as the capacity

Let’s Talk Bullying

People rarely, if ever, give thought to bullying, especially in this side of the world.  Why? Because bullying isn’t something we think of as a problem.  But the truth is, bullying can have severe consequences. And since childhood experiences shape who people become as adults, the consequences of being bullied can linger on and affect a child’s adult life as well.  Childhood bullying can lead to depression, anxiety, low-self esteem among kids. And when these kids grow up, they may struggle socially because of the experience they have had in the past.  So, it is important to stop concealing this menace under the pretext of “kids do this stuff. Its fine!” and finally start the conversation around bullying.  And, when talking about bullying, it would be unfair not to go by this incident that occured in the recent past.  A Lookback At the Scarsdale Incident The Scarsdale incident took Pakistan by storm a few weeks ago. The news made waves on social media and #Scarsdale became a top Twitter trend and remained there for several days. We are past that incident now and distracted by other things, but that tale of bullying is forever recorded in the pages of horrific history.  This incident was a first of its kind. At least no other such incident had ever caught the public eye at this scale. And now that we have had a sneak peek into an environment that allows and fosters such bullies, it’s important to stop and take a

Boys, you made us proud!

Bidding winters a warm goodbye, here we are at the start of the summer season, tuning in to our go-to sports channels with snacks and sodas yet again, waiting for the boys to seal the pitch with their victories. Yes, we are talking PSL! With high hopes, renewed energy and gushing spirits, this year is gonna be no different as the excitement levels of the masses continue to shoot with every ball that hits the boundary.  Amidst all this cricket craze, we saw how some of our favourite players continued to win the hearts of their people, not just on the cricket ground but, more importantly, in their personal lives. With wedding shenanigans roaring out loud and social media posts getting all trendy, there was one thing that set everything apart. Yes, you read it right!  Opting for no-music events, keeping the camera click-clicks minimum, choosing not to bombard their feeds with those special moments and keeping extra care of privacy, the boys set an example leagues apart on how you can have a halal celebration, keeping intact all the shariah-compliant Islamic values. Besides that, in these times of modernity, with all that glam and glitter accompanied by fame, money and power, one could have gone all out and about. But still, choosing to stick to your core values and not breaking the bounds of modesty is something we surely have to accolade an appreciation for.  “And one of His signs is that He created for you spouses from

Türkiye and Syria: Geçmiş Olsun

Our Muslim brothers and sisters in Türkiye and Syria are suffering. As fellow Muslims, we should feel their pain as we feel our own, and extend help and support through all possible means. Take a moment to make dua for the departed souls. Anyone who dies after being crushed under a falling wall is a martyr. So, In sha Allah the deceased will be enjoying honorable provision from their Rabb. Let’s all make dua that Allah increases them in favor. Make dua for the families of the deceased. May Allah grant them beautiful patience – Sabrun Jameel – to deal with such a huge loss. Donate to reliable organizations that are helping our brothers and sisters in Türkiye and Syria. Also, let us take this calamity as a reminder, humble ourselves, and reflect. Allah SWT says: “Why then, did they not supplicate in humility when a calamity from Us came upon them? Instead, their hearts were hardened and Satan adorned for them what they were doing.” [Quran 6:43] Let’s allow this devastating calamity shake our hearts and shatter the glass of indifference that covers it. Let’s not just scroll but reflect also. We can start by taking the following steps: Increase in Istighfar. This earthquake should be a reminder of how fragile our lives are. We are safe only until the earth starts shaking. And when it does, none can protect us except Allah. So, let’s turn to Allah SWT, repent, ask for forgiveness and protection. Remember, calamities often

A Million Dollar Dream

Rows of Juniper trees line the garden area and look more orange than green. Fair enough, it is the peak of the fall season. With vending machines carrying his favourite soda, a tennis court with lush green flooring, cafeterias with all the right snacks, and rich brown staircases going up the 12-storey building, Ahmed – a freshman, has just entered the university of his dreams hoping to have a great 1st-day experience. Pulling out his schedule sealed in a white envelope, he looks for the location of his first class. Third floor – 305, this is what the schedule says. Creak.. creak, the door opens, leaving Ahmed blown away. To his disbelief, he sees an array of different counters selling white, yellow, and pink coloured substances. “Are they dr.. dru.. DRUGS?”. He immediately closes the door and steps away, not believing what he saw. Thinking that there might be some misprinting in the timetable, Ahmed decides to check out the other classes. Third floor 302, this might be the one. He opens the door and remains absolutely stunned. Boys and girls wearing headphones, buzzing along, and enjoying a never-ending selection of alcoholic drinks perfectly displayed on crystal bars. Muttering to himself, this can’t be true; he shuts the door with a bang. “What is WRONG here?” he says to himself. Now, with every door Ahmed opens, he comes across a different reality. 304 – concert happening, 303 – some Zohair-named guy’s bachelors party is going on, 307 – cinema
