Being Her! – Interview With Sara Asif

Heart-to-heart questions about her childhood, leaving the banking sector, women issues and more! I was considered a reasonably average adolescent. Being the eldest of my siblings, I was expected to be the most well-behaved – which I was! My mother says if they told me to sit in one spot, they could trust that I wouldn’t move until asked. Those things obviously change as you become a teenager, and being an adventurous soul, I enjoyed my fair share of mischievous activities. But I was never a rebellious kid.  I came back to Islam much later in life. Growing up, I saw my Dada (grandfather) pray and fast, which would motivate me to follow along. But nothing beyond that. By my early thirties, I began feeling a sense of emptiness and was struck by the same existential question most people in search of spirituality face- “What is the purpose of my life?”. I had always been very proactive, but things started to seem relatively meaningless after a while. I felt there had to be a greater purpose to my existence, and in the absence of any mentor figure or sense of direction – I turned to the Quran. It definitely took some time to strike a balance, and if I were to be completely honest, it’s an ongoing struggle. I aim to set aside the early morning hours for my ibadah. It’s the best time to focus on yourself and your spiritual rejuvenation before the daily grind. As for the

Wo-men – Made in China

From poor-quality made in China to good-quality made in China, we all grew up. But if I tell you that now you’ll also find humans – made in China version, would you believe it? Maybe or maybe not. But one thing is clearer than it will ever be, they definitely are not good quality.  A few days back, social media had been the centre of controversy with popular trends of gender parties, highlighting men appearing to be women, which has perhaps led women to think as to why they are behind in this race. Thus, the latest Pakistani drama nowadays is all the craze. While some seem to get blown away by the oh-so-good acting, others can’t stop but rave about the courageous role that has been played. Appreciative comments, appraising posts, high TRPs and millions of views, our youth seems to go all out and about, loving every single bit of it but failing to understand the bigger picture. How so? Let’s discuss! But before that, let’s have a Q/A session!  Your internet connection gets down. Will you call the service provider and ask? No! You simply take your scissors and cut the wire, no connection, no distortion – great! Your world’s best friend forgets to bring a present at your birthday; you simply let it go and enjoy the party with him? Surely not! You cut off from him and bid your friendship a goodbye, no gift, no friend – priorities! You feel lazy and don’t want

Dear Flood Victims, We Are With You!

“Pakistan is facing an emergency!”  “Over 30 million people have been affected by the floods.”  “The damage is so colossal; it will take years to rebuild….”  Terrifying and heart-wrenching headlines and videos have been circulating on social media. Stones waiting to crumble, buildings ready to crash, food, clothing, shelter – nowhere to be found, and innocent people having their lives at stake. There seems to be no light at the end of the tunnel – a tunnel through which can come in gushing water ready to sweep off the existence of life. It is depressing… truly depressing; one can not imagine the pain and suffering of those stuck in calamity, but a Muslim never loses hope in the mercy of Allah (SWT), no matter how hard the situation gets. So, what is a better way to react? Firstly, sticking our heads in the sand won’t help. Secondly, if you ever wanted to help humanity in some way or the other, realise that that time for ACTION is now! As much as the floods have been devastating, our people have also stepped up and shown that, indeed, “the Ummah is like one body!” Numerous organisations have collected donations and sent relief teams, including Youth Club. We all have come across individuals, families, community groups and even some hawkers, workers and little children donating whatever they can.  Apart from donating in such ways, we must also pause and reflect. People may get worked up blaming environmental neglect or corrupt policies for

Palestine: A reminder for the Ummah

Not so long ago, in lands not so far, a girl used to live happily with her family. But one day, everything changed! Sounds of gunshots, a bullet passing through her baby brother’s head, her mother crying in excruciating pain and her house on a time bomb – tick tick tick, boom!   An upcoming action movie, is it? You must be wondering! With extra salty popcorn and a large can of soda, it’ll all be perfect, right? Well, hold on until I tell you, it is not some fiction-film scene; it is a real-life scenario! Fail to believe? Google it yourself. But wait, what will you write? World War 2? No, just write “PALESTINE”.  A few days back, we celebrated our independence as Pakistanis, but the question is, are we independent as an Ummah? What about those valuable lives at stake just because we are not united? What about those little children who only get to see pistols and rifles when they should see gardens and butterflies? What about those mothers whose lives are all about crying over the loss of loved ones when they should be cooking humble meals for their families? What about those fathers who go out to earn bread and butter only to return and find their families dead? What about those hard-working students who head to masjids and madrassas to learn religion only to become the target of mass killers and suicide bombers?  Allah (SWT) mentions in the Quran, “Whoever takes a life, it

Self-Love: Am I loving myself right?

Am I loving myself right?  You’d see global pop musicians, athletes, Instagram influencers, and YouTubers all talking about it, highlighting different concepts and sharing different ideas. But there’s one conversation you’ll now find in every corner of social media that even some of our YC speakers have addressed – the intriguing, appealing concept of self-love.  Self-care, loving oneself, being kind to yourself – all these phrases capture the concept of ‘regarding one’s own happiness or advantage’. Some habits associated with this concept are things like: eating what you want, not overworking yourself, learning to say ‘no’ to others for your well-being, and not being too harsh on your own mistakes.  Youth like us are especially attracted to this concept. After battling so many peer pressures and trying to please so many people – considering the notion that perhaps ‘the only person I should please is myself’ is pretty relieving and refreshing. But as Muslims, we always put the examples of the Prophet (SAW) and his companions first. So what did they do in this regard? As we know, the Prophet (SAW) would stand up for long hours of the night until his feet became swollen, although he had been forgiven of all his sins. When asked about this, his answer was, “Shall I not be a thankful slave (of Allah)?” [Sahih Bukhari – 6471] We know Umar (RA) would roam around the streets at night, looking for citizens to help. He used to say he was afraid to be

Will there be Wi-Fi in Jannah?

Will there be free Wi-Fi in Jannah? How about sleek race cars? And finger-lickin’ good KFC? Recently, a Pakistani humanitarian and singer, Shehzad Roy, wondered in his Insta post if we’d choose hell or heaven if there was Wi-Fi in hell but not in heaven. Of course, we’d think it’s odd to imagine such things in heaven. In fact, even the sahabah (companions of the prophet) back in the Prophet (SAW)’s time had exactly such questions popping up in their minds according to their own wishes. A man asked the Prophet (SAW), “O Messenger of Allah, will there be camels in Paradise?” He said, “If Allah admits you into Paradise, you will have therein whatever your soul desires and pleases your eyes.” [Tirmidhī 2543] So guess what? You’re in for a treat! Jannah isn’t only about rivers and gardens but also about an upbeat social life, adventures and parties. Allah (SWT) reminds us that,  “Verily, the Companions of the Garden shall that Day have joy in all that they do.” [Quran 36:55] In essence, it’s ALL you want. Even surfing social media? Yes, and more! “A (small) place equal to an area occupied by a whip in Paradise is better than the (whole) world and whatever is in it.” [Sahih al-Bukhari – 6415] Imagine all the goodies of this world: the latest smartphones, celebrity mansions, lifetime friendships, the smell of rain and true love. In comparison to Jannah, it’s all nothing. So let your imagination run wild and brace

Is this the right way to celebrate Independence?

Seeing these flags and decorations on the street, I can’t help but remember the times of actual independence that my grandparents told me about. The struggles they went through – the number of horns they had to blow, the number of badges and t-shirts they had to wear, the number of one wheels and races they had to do on their bikes, the number of songs and movies they had to write and launch… this and so much more. I can’t even begin to imagine their struggle. But I guess if you have to form a whole country, these kinds of struggles and efforts are inevitable. Wait, what? That didn’t happen? There were no trumpets and badges? No race cars and bikes on the streets? No traffic jams? No songs? Did they go through actual sacrifices, including that of wealth and blood? La hawla wa la quwwata illa billah. What are you saying? That Pakistan was made with bloodshed and struggle? SubhanAllah… That’s too tough, man! What a bummer! I was just about to prepare my list of national songs to blast onto speakers tomorrow. Wait, are you saying I can do something even better? Are you saying I can celebrate independence by doing something worthwhile for Pakistan? Wow! Why didn’t I think of that? I guess I’ll start by making some promises to myself for the sake of a better Pakistan. On this independence day, I promise I’ll try not to go over the speed limit, not use

Interview with Tuaha ibn Jalil

I was a zestful and energetic young lad who had no other purpose except to enjoy life to its fullest. I did crazy stunts in my life because I believed that you only live once, but if you do it right, once is enough. However, I was wrong; it’s not YOLO. It’s YOLT – You only live twice.  It was a fatal bike accident that changed me completely. I had a near-death experience that made me the person I am today. The accident which I thought to be a catastrophe for me, resulted as a blessing from my Lord.

Porn—Kicking the Bad Habit

“If I were given the opportunity to press a delete button that could destroy all the servers of the planet that contained pornographic material, I would crawl on the path of glass and thorns, even if it kills me, to press that button”. (Interview of a porn addict by BBC)  Imagine yourself lying on a comfortable couch in a dimly lit room. You are all alone, scrolling through a cell phone with your eyes glued to the internet. All of a sudden, some inappropriate content pops up on the screen. For a moment, you feel the urge to tap it and see what comes after the ‘trailer’ you were just baited with.

Glamouristan

Everything is fair in love and art? How exciting is the content pouring into our newsfeed: celeb hot news, steamy photoshoots and the latest movie releases! Seems like the Pakistani media industry is really taking off! Or is it taking a hit? If you see with the divine lens, everything changes. It gets depressing to see how we’ve morally regressed while everyone thinks we’ve progressed. Competing with Bollywood and Hollywood, we forget our Islamic core. Every other release is shockingly disturbing- but not for all Muslims.

How I left Music – Raja Zia ul Haq

When I began my journey towards Allah (SWT)’s path, music was actually one of the last things I left. Believe me, I was always looking for ways to justify my music addiction. I had three shelves across my bedroom wall full of music CDs. Not only this, but I also had about 10-15 GBs worth of music stored on my computer. But despite looking far and wide, I was unable to find reasons that would justify my love for music.
